Tower conversion kit
The tower form factor enclosure allows the rack-mount FT servers to be installed as tower models in an office environment.
Unprecedented fault tolerance
Achieving near-zero downtime is for mission-critical businesses that cannot afford a single moment of failure. NEC Fault Tolerant (FT) servers deliver exceptional uptime through dual modular hardware redundancy and help maximize your business outcomes.
The NEC Express5800/ft series servers provide high availability through hardware redundancy in all components: CPU, memory, I/O, hard disk drives, and cooling fans.
High-availability TechnologyGeminiEngine™ - The heart of Lockstep Processing
The heart of the dual modular architecture is the GeminiEngine™ chipset specially engineered to synchronize redundant components and prevent CPU performance degradation due to hardware redundancy control. GeminiEngine enables "lockstep" processing, which allows the redundant components to process the same instructions simultaneously, eliminating potential failure points for continuous processing.
Active Upgrade™
Active Upgrade™ is a combination of system architecture and software that allows the administrator to perform routine software maintenance with minimal interruption.* The Active Upgrade technology addresses planned server downtime necessary to install upgrades and enhancements to operating systems, service packs, applications, and system software. The updating process has much less impact to business operations with Active Upgrade by splitting the fully redundant system into two independently running servers and enabling online upgrades. As an innovative approach to address a top concern of IT departments on dealing with the monthly patches issued by Microsoft, Active Upgrade ensures the availability of the Windows operating system.
* Active Upgrade™ is available on the Windows models only.
Rapid Disk Resync (RDR)
The RDR resumes disk mirroring by performing quick copies of only data changes, rather than entire disk data, helping reduce the resynchronization time and improving disk reliability and availability.
* The RDR is available on the Windows models only.
VirtualizationServer consolidation with virtualization can significantly lower the TCO by reducing distributed servers and much of the maintenance related workloads and costs. By supporting VMware® vSphere 4 and Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 Enterprise Hyper-V™ 2.0, NEC Express5800/ft series servers provide a virtualization platform of utmost reliability and availability.
In a virtualized environment, multiple virtual servers reside on a single physical server and its downtime can cause unprecedented damage. NEC FT servers reduce these costly risks by its fully redundant hardware and ensure continuous operation of your virtualized setting.
Note: Specifications are subject to change without notice.
NEC is expanding the value of fault tolerance (FT) for virtualization by introducing the first solution for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. This solution delivers the continuous availability, scalable performance, and TCO savings required to accelerate the adoption of virtualization technology in data centers, branch offices, and ASPs.
Benefits of NEC FT Series with Hyper-V
- Unsurpassed Hyper-V Availability
- Deployment & Infrastructure Simplicity
- CAPEX & OPEX Savings
The introduction of Microsoft Hyper-V support on NEC's Express5800 FT Series server family leverages and extends the benefits of both technologies.
The NEC Express5800 FT Series with Hyper-V is the ideal solution for large data center workloads that require a high level of SLA, as well as a simple and cost-effective solution for mission critical departmental, and branch office workloads.
High availability through NEC is affordable because fault tolerance is found on a single logical server, and it does not require a data center or large IT staff to manage the physical or virtual infrastructure. The union of fault tolerance and virtualization enables NEC Express5800 FT Series to deliver unsurpassed availability, data integrity, operational simplicity and financial savings.
Availability and Data Integrity
Processing the Hyper-V virtualization layer and guest software occurs concurrently on both modules, eliminating potential downtime when a hardware component fails on either module. The faulty module can be removed from service without loss of Hyper-V state or loss of guest software.
Operational Simplicity
Standard remote management tools, simple recovery and in-the-box fault tolerance on the NEC Express5800 FT Series server improves the ease of management for virtualized data centers. For a standard Hyper-V virtualization deployment, no special external infrastructure is required.
Other options for high availability server virtualization require additional infrastructure, which adds complexity and expense. The NEC FT Series can deliver continuous availability for Hyper-V by using internal storage and standard management software.
Cost Savings
The NEC Express5800 FT Series with Hyper-V can lower CAPEX (capital expenses) in infrastructure and licensing, as well as OPEX (operational expenses) in terms of IT resources, maintenance, and power/cooling. Since the NEC FT server provides a single logical server, clients can realize significant license policy savings.
With the widespread adoption of virtualization technology to lower costs, scalable and ultra-reliable fault tolerance is essential. To meet this mission critical need, the NEC FT Series Servers brings proven fault tolerant hardware to VMware solutions.
The NEC FT VMware solution provides virtualization fault tolerance in hardware and enables each VM's performance to scale to meet the needs of its applications. With standard deployment and management, businesses enjoy the peace of mind that comes with no transaction or data loss, as well as lower CAPEX and OPEX.
Scalable Fault Tolerant Virtual CPU Performance

In testing conducted by Principled Technologies, the NEC Express5800/R320a FT Series server provided near linear, scalable virtual CPU performance while providing the highest levels of fault tolerant availability.
Principled Technologies measured database performance in a single VM with different numbers of vCPUs and found excellent scalability. For compute-intensive database applications that require more power than a single vCPU, fault tolerant processing power can be added to any VM.
Throughout these tests, the Express5800/R320a continued to operate without data loss and with nearly unchanged database performance in the face of a catastrophic event.
